YEAR 4 RIVER TRIP
Delaware River, Pennsylvania & New Jersey

Emerge Year 4 fellows came together for a camping and river trip on the Lenape Sippu (Delaware River) bordering NJ and PA. Fellows traveled north of Philadelphia to a campground near the Delaware River, where they spent 3 days and 2 nights, May 30-Jun 1, 2024, camping in tents and canoeing on the river. After the first night of team bonding and camp at Cranberry Run Campground, fellows spent the following day canoeing to Worthington State Forest, where they engaged in meaningful reflection while setting up for the second night of camp.

Emerge funded 2 undergraduate students, 21 graduate students, and 2 early career professionals from the Year 4 cohort, plus 1 graduate student alumnus from the Year 3 cohort (total: 26) to participate.

All river logistics and instruction were orchestrated by collaborators at the Virginia Commonwealth University Outdoor Adventure Program (VCU-OAP) and guided by alumni of the River-based Immersive Education & Research (RIVER) Field Studies Network RCN-UBE (NSF DBI-2120665): Susan Washko (Western Colorado University) and Jabari Jones (Bowdoin College).
