YEAR 2 VISUAL COMMUNICATION:
GRAPHIC DESIGN WORKSHOP
Georgetown, South Carolina

The Year 2 Visual Communication: Graphic Design Workshop was held on March 6-10, 2023. Emerge fellows traveled to Georgetown, South Carolina to stay at the University of South Carolina’s Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences (BIMCS) where they spent three full days and four nights on the Hobcaw Barony property. Days were spent learning with Inkscape to design scientific posters and graphics, learning about the work being conducted by Francis Marion University's Belle W. Baruch Institute for South Carolina Studies (with Dr. Lynn Hanson, Steven Sims, and Linda Sullen), spending time in the coastal marsh with BIMCS staff (with Bruce Pfirrmann), and hearing stories of Gullah Geechee culture at the Gullah Museum (with Beatrice and Janette Rodrigues).

Emerge funded 4 undergraduate students, 12 graduate students, and 4 early career professionals (total: 20) to participate. This workshop was co-led by Co-PI Dan McGarvey with support from Co-PI Amanda Rugenski, Co-PI Amy Rosemond, and Breanna Ondich (Emerge Program Coordinator).
