GCSU Endowed Professorship Seminar Series set to return
"The first speaker of the series’ return was Dr. J. Checo Colón-Gaud (Dr. Checo) an aquatic ecologist, professor and associate dean of Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies at Georgia Southern University. His presentation was titled “Emerging Towards a More Diverse Community of Freshwater Scientists” and focused on talking to students about diversity ‘above the water’ and how to gain experience toward their career goals."

Rogue River Rendezvous
"Last October 3 - 8 the RFSN hosted the Rogue River Rendezvous at the Siskiyou Field Institute and on the Rogue River in southwest Oregon. The DEI panel featured Breanna Ondich of the Society for Freshwater Science's Emerge program, Sandra Clinton (UNC Charlotte) of Promoting Geoscience Research, Education, and Success (PROGRESS), Anita Marshall (University of Florida) of the International Association for Geoscience Diversity (IAGD) Library of Inclusive Technology (LIFT) Program, Risa Shimoda from the River Management Society River Training Center, and Joseph Gazing Wolf from Arizona State University."

River Field Studies Network supports Society for Freshwater Science Emerge Program River Trip on Pere Marquette
"The Emerge program and the River Field Studies Network teamed up to put together a 3-day canoe trip down the Pere Marquette River, a national Wild and Scenic River flowing from the cedar swamps of the central Michigan out to the eponymous Lake. ...the major objective of the trip was to encourage student cohort-building through a shared outdoor experience.

Spring SFS EMERGE Workshops for Students
"The workshop for the 2021-2022 Emerge cohort was held on January 2-6, 2022. Emerge fellows travelled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to stay at Sevilleta Field Station where they spent three full days and four nights. Days were spent mining and analyzing aquatic NEON data with Program R, writing and submitting two abstracts for the 2022 Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting, and exploring nearby Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge."

Georgia Southern biology professor awarded grant to support minority students
Georgia Southern University Professor of Biology J. Checo Colón-Gaud, Ph.D., is part of a team of researchers awarded a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to support training and experiences for underrepresented minority students and early career scientists in the field of freshwater science.
